The Wailing Wall, also known as the Western Wall (or Kotel in Hebrew), is one of the most sacred sites in Judaism. It is located in the Old City of Jerusalem and serves as a remnant of the ancient Second Temple, which was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE. For centuries, the wall has been a site of pilgrimage, prayer, and reflection.

Directly on the other side of the Western Wall lies the Temple Mount (known in Arabic as Haram al-Sharif, meaning “The Noble Sanctuary”). This elevated area is one of the most contested and spiritually significant locations in the world, revered by Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Here’s what is located on the other side:


1. The Temple Mount – A Holy Site in Judaism

For Jews, the Temple Mount is the holiest site in the world. It was the location of the First Temple, built by King Solomon, and the Second Temple, which was later destroyed. The Western Wall itself is a surviving remnant of the retaining wall of the Temple Mount. According to Jewish tradition, the inner sanctum of the Temple, known as the Holy of Holies, was situated on the Temple Mount and was the dwelling place of God’s divine presence.

2. Al-Aqsa Mosque – A Sacred Site in Islam

On the other side of the Western Wall, the Temple Mount is home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is the third holiest site in Islam after Mecca and Medina. The mosque is a place of daily worship for Muslims and holds significant religious importance, as it is believed to be the place where the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven during the Isra and Mi’raj.

3. The Dome of the Rock

Another iconic structure on the Temple Mount is the Dome of the Rock, a gold-capped shrine built in the 7th century CE. It enshrines the Foundation Stone, which holds profound significance in both Judaism and Islam.

  • In Jewish tradition: The Foundation Stone is believed to be the site where Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac and where the Ark of the Covenant once rested in the Holy of Holies.
  • In Islamic tradition: It is the rock from which Muhammad ascended to heaven during his Night Journey.

4. The Archaeological Layout of the Temple Mount

  1. The Temple Mount is an expansive area, home to various ancient structures, gates, and pathways. Some key features include:

    • The Golden Gate (Gate of Mercy): Located on the eastern wall of the Temple Mount, it is sealed and holds eschatological significance in both Jewish and Christian traditions.
    • The underground structures: Beneath the Temple Mount are archaeological tunnels and chambers, including parts of the original Herodian construction.

Religious and Political Sensitivities

The area on the other side of the Western Wall is not only a place of profound spiritual significance but also one of the most politically and culturally sensitive locations in the world. Control of and access to the Temple Mount is a source of tension between Israelis and Palestinians, with ongoing debates about religious freedom and sovereignty.

On the other side of the Western Wall is the Temple Mount, home to some of the holiest sites in Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. While it carries immense historical and spiritual value, it is also a focal point of cultural and political complexity. The area symbolizes humanity’s common heritage, but it also reminds us of the importance of striving for peace and mutual understanding.
